Auto body repairs are done to correct damage due to collisions, exposure, excessive wear, and any other issues that leave one or more parts of a car damaged. Auto body repair involves using various techniques to bring a vehicle back to the shape it was in before the damage occurred. This article will discuss some of the steps commonly taken in the auto body repair process, so you will have a better idea of how the process will go.

An assessment will be done

The car will first need to be assessed. This is done to determine the extent of the damage and provide an estimate of the necessary repairs. An assessment involves a visual inspection of the vehicle.

Surface repairs will be worked on

The auto repair technician will use the necessary means, techniques, and equipment to repair any dents, scratches, and other damages that are on the surface of the vehicle. In some cases, this process can be easy if the damage is small. However, there can be a lot of work involved when the damage is severe.

The structure will be repaired

If the car's frame has any damage, then the technician will repair this as well. Repairing the frame usually requires special equipment that can do things like realign metal parts, so the car maintains its structural integrity.

Damaged parts will be replaced

Not all body damage can be repaired in the shop without replacing some parts. There can be some auto body damage where parts aren't as reliable or durable after being damaged. Sometimes, it's easier and more cost-effective to replace parts rather than repair them. The technician will determine what parts need to be replaced, order them if they don't already have them on hand, and then physically replace them. Some car parts that are commonly replaced after being damaged include the bumpers, the fenders, and the doors.

The finishing will be done

Once all the parts have been repaired and/or replaced, the car will go through the refinishing process. This is the step that's done to give the car its pre-damage appearance. It includes such things as preparing the surface, priming it, color matching it, and then painting it. After the affected parts of the car have been painted, a clear coat will be applied, which will offer a glossy finish that also acts as a protective layer for the car's surface. At this point, the car's auto body repairs will be completed.
